well that was interesting…

so i’ve officially completed my second race… the 5 mile race at the bridle trails winter running festival… and it was cool… certainly had its moments though…

as i mentioned before the weather’s been pretty wet here even by seattle standards for the last month or so and conditions promised to be wet, muddy, and… poopy… being as these are horse riding trails… conditions were indeed as forecasted… hah…

’twas evident from about a mile into the race that i was in a different running world than i’m used to… i’ve been running on streets and sidewalks instead of through sludge and though i regularly deal with some pretty decent hills they’re not covered with the afforementioned mix of water/mud/horse crap… about halfway through the adventure i realized that i was wasting a decent amount of energy trying (in vain) to mimimize the time i spent in the puddles… from then on i just blasted right through ‘em… it was also evident at this point that i a) was dressed too warmly and b) had started too fast… bummer… but when the going got tough i tried to relax and focus on form more than anything else and it all worked out ok… finished in 46:04 which i’m just fine with all things considered…

there were some big time studs and studettes there today… there were several different race categories – the 5 mile version i did being the shortest… there was also a 10 mile race and… wait for it… a 50km race that could be done either in teams as a relay or solo… i take my hat off to the folks that finished that mother…

and i’m already looking forward to next year’s race…

love-of-my-life karen and the chilluns were waiting for me at the finish line which was magnificent… thanks for braving the elements for me honey… i can’t tell you how much your support means to me…

next up… a valentine’s day 5k at greenlake in seattle… short… flat… paved… lacking in horse poop… hah…

after the race we went to a birthday party for our pal phoebe who’s four now… bubbles the clown was there…

and the day finished off with some bevvies with pals the wheelers at our place post-party…

it was a fine day…
