so its that time of year again… tournament time…

i friggin’ love the ncaa tournament… i do… you know what i dig even more???… the time between when the brackets are set and the tip-off of the first game… anticipation!!!… possibility!!!…

guess i should clarify… ‘s been a while since the ol’ alma mater buckeyes have had much of a shot of any real tourney success and i reckon it’ll be a while longer ’til they do… i’m not talking about any one team… i’m talking about the bracket… the prognosticatin’… the perfect sheet… for those three days everyone is golden… all possibilities exist… everyone can be the next cinderella story… and i think that’s awesome…

this year, as is my personal situation almost always, once the actual playing commences lotsa magic dissapears… hah… i’m in two pools this year… and after day one i’m safely in the middle of the pack in one of ‘em… in the other one i’m next to last… lotsa games to be played but my new strategy needs to start generating some wins or i’m gonna be done before the elite eight…

yeah baby… i’m ready for day two…

so kenzie goes to daycare at a place called the learning garden… by all accounts a top notch organization and one that i’m very glad we came across and have had a relationship with for the last year and a half… we’ve seen the little lady bloom socially and i’m amazed on a near daily basis at some of the stuff i hear mackenzie say… i’m constantly surprised at how her vocabulary and general understanding of the world continues to grow… and i think we have the lg to thank for a lot of that… i shall do my best to keep her socially engaged and awestruck by the coolness and wonder of the world when the stay-at-home dad phase begins…

well tonight we went to see the learning garden’s “springfest”… an annual rite of passage for the little nippers and nipper-ettes of the school… they rent out the performing arts center and put on a show for all the parents… singin’… dancin’… jumpin’ around… all that sort o’ stuff… the theme for this years festivities was the beatles… ’twas by and large hella cute… at times hilarious… and generally fun to see…

kenzie’s class did a little dance to yellow submarine which they’ve been working on for a few weeks… everyone dressed up in bathing suits and wore sailor hats and kinda danced and waved a blue thing… the blue thing’s significance sorta escaped me to be honest… maybe it was water…

here’s the thing tho’… kenzie didn’t seem to dig it too much… she did her dance but kinda faced stage left and the back wall… looking pretty uncomfortable the whole time… when it was done they scooted ‘em off to the green room or wherever…after a few other classes did their thing all the kids came out for an encore and did some beatles tune en masse… when that started chuggin’ along we spotted kenzie holding hands with one of her favorite teachers a bit off to the side looking a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of the situation… so i went up and gave her a hug at the side of
the stage… i asked her if she was doing ok… she said “yeah” whilst eyeing me with a total get-me-the-hell-outta-here look… so i brought her back to our seats to watch the very last bit of the show…

so karen and i were talking about the whole experience… feeling bad for the boo for being uncomfortable and/or scared… wishing kenzie didn’t have to endure the specatacle… and wishing we didn’t have to go through watching her up there feeling all overwhelmed…

what’s a parent to do???… on one hand you wanna protect your child from every bad situation that is out there… on the other hand you want to give them the opportunity to do new things and expose them to new situations and things that they might really dig… i’m personally a believer in putting yourself outside your comfort zone on a regular basis… i think its the best, most effective path to personal growth and self realization… ’tis one thing when your an adult and make the conscious decision to do so… ’tis entirely another i reckon when one minute you’re rolling along enjoying
life and the next your under the spotlights in a bathing suit singin’ yellow subarine to a 500 strangers… and you’re two… hah…

a little perpective i guess… there were chilluns at the soiree this eve that were friggin’ catatonic with fear when their time came to be on stage… there were kids that were crying and totally hating being up there… i feel really bad for their parents… what kinda godawful monsters do some of them feel like???… hah… kenzie merely did her dance looking off to the side feeling shy… it was however our darlin’ innocent little two year old up there looking off to the side and lookin shy…

on the bright side… seems our little lady is proud of getting up there tonight…

as seems to be the case at times… significantly more traumatic for the parents than the child…

yesterday was a big day…

i alluded to big changes in my last post… well yesterday they were officially kicked off when i gave notice at work of my intention to leave at the end of the month to be a stay-at-home dad…

was a bit of a bittersweet feeling as i told folks what was going on…

on one hand i’m sad to be leaving… been with them for about seven years and its been a very cool time in my life… that timespan has seen me be a (relatively) care-free batchelor… meet karen… fall in love… get married… buy a house… father two amazing children… be in three amazing bands… make friends… lose friends… and through all of those adventures a constant backdrop has been my workplace and work-type comrades… a great company and great folks…

on the other hand… i’m ecstatic about the opportunity to stay home and spend my days with mackenzie and sebastian… karen and i have been doing a lot of thinking about the whole childcare situation as her maternity leave draws to an end and taking all factors into account we started to float the idea of me staying home… the more and more we thought about it the better an idea it seemed…

a challenge???… you betcha… for all of us… but one that i’m amazingly excited to undertake… and far as i’ve been able to tell in my 37ish years the good stuff don’t come easy… haha…

so karen sent me a transcript of a conversation she had with mackenzie in the car today… i thought it was cool enough to commit to the ages…

me: honk
K: wassat?
me: That’s a person sleeping at the wheel. I honked at them.
K: I like honks.
me: You like honks?
K: yes, I do.
K: I like cars.
me: you like cars?
K: yes, I do. I like big cars
me: oh
K: I like trucks too
me: you do?
K: yes, I do. I like trucks.
me: do you know what I like?
K: yah (pause)
me: I like champagne and orange juice
K: yah (pause) I like scissors.

playset
Originally uploaded by bushrod.

after a weekend of work the monster is done… kenzie digs it big time which gives me joy… and its built like a tank so i reckon both she and tugboat will have years o’ fun exploring every square inch…

as an added bonus its conveniently located in close proximity to the deck… whereupon are located some comfy patio chairs in which frosty adult beverages may and will be consumed whilst keeping a close and protective eye on the playset’s users…

lessee… what’s new… i’m a tad sick-ish… been fighting a cold with the assistance of zicam and airborne, a couple of the finest remedies/preventatives i’ve found… today however we shall bring out the big guns and take massive doses of dayquil methinks because i’m on a mission to finish the king-hell playset that we have acquired for les enfants…

worked on it a bit on thursday and most of yesterday… the end is in sight… really small and way in the distance… but in sight… and today i think amigos steve and dw are going to come over with their respective family units and out of town guests as appropos and help finish ‘er off… and drink beer… and barbecue… sounds lovely dunnit?…

sakes alive… its true… we’re the proud owners of actual cds… the fruits of our labo(u)rs so to speak… well i for one think they look and sound great… spank plan for world domination is in effect…

and our practice last night turned out to be a pretty good one i reckon… started out a bit sluggish but by the end we were having our own lil’ festival of joy… i was anyway… and steve’s sister sue and her pal wendy stopped by to check out the festivities.. i thought that was quite cool…

as an aside i’ll say congrats to steve fosset for his ’round the world flight… as a guitar playing sandpaper salesman who has a degree in aero/astro engineering the whole “flight” thing holds a very dear place in my heart… and i suppose i just generally like to see groovy stuff happen… so atta boy…
